Who We Are

The ‘Tamil School of Western Australia’ was formed in 1980 by our Tamil community members who felt the need to teach Tamil language to our younger generation so that they do not lose their identity and mother tongue. The founding members of the ‘Tamil School of Western Australia’ were Dr. Arun Radha Krishnan, Late Mr. Ratnasingam and Late Mr. Laxman Subramaniam.

The ‘Tamil School of Western Australia’ conducted its classes at the ‘Tamil House’ in Perth City up until 1995. In 1995, the ‘Tamil School of Western Australia’ moved to Mandela hall in Bateman and functioned there up until 2009. With the formation of the ‘Perth North Tamil School’ in 1995 to cater for the needs of the northern suburbs based Tamil community, the ‘Tamil School of Western Australia’ embraced the adjective of ‘South’ and started to operate under the name of ‘South Tamil School of Western Australia’. In 2010, the School moved to the Willetton Senior High School and operated there up until mid-2013. Since July 2013 the school has been operating in the current Lynwood Senior High School location. The school celebrated fortieth anniversary in 2020.

The South Tamil School of Western Australia currently offers Tamil language classes from Kindergarten to Year 12, including ATAR course to enable the students to take Tamil as a LOTE subject in Year 12 exam.

The school curriculum includes Tamil language, literature, arts, cultural and social values. The School has special and transitional classes for current and newly enrolled students based on their learning capacities and needs. The South Tamil School is a diverse school that involves teachers, students and management from many countries such as India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia and Singapore.

At present, the South Tamil School is managed and administered by an eleven-member volunteer administration team with the involvement of parent and community volunteers. The school now has 26 classes and 52 trained volunteer teachers with more than 430 student enrolments. We operate as a volunteer based, not-for-profit, independent community language school.
